DIY projects are a great boredom buster for active kids. Even better are projects they can enjoy afterward. Building a sandbox is a fun summertime activity to do with kids and a hands-on learning opportunity for miniature mathletes. Before you begin, check out this DIY guide.
- Dig out 6” of dirt in the desired shape and size, then add a 1” layer of sand to create a level canvas for the project.
- Lay a frame of wood boards along the perimeter and screw scrap wood at the corners to connect them. Then, lay a second frame to create another layer.
- Spread a sheet of landscape fabric across the frame and push it into the area of the frame.
- Add the final frame and screw it into the existing layers. Trim away any excess fabric and fill the box with sand.
- Add a cover. A tarp is a quick, easy solution, or a wooden structure can be attached with a hinge for a sturdier option.
Don’t forget to accessorize your play pit with toys and game pieces to complete the project.
