There’s a reason why your mom always insisted you use a coaster on your family’s wood furniture - if condensation occurs, an unsightly white ring will result. But have no fear: if it happens, there are some methods to retain your furniture’s natural finish. But be aware, the first rule of thumb is the quicker you take action, the better the results will be.
- Iron/Hair Dryer - Applying heat via an iron (emptied of its water) or a hair dryer can lift the moisture before it has time to seep in fully. Place a cotton napkin or towel over the stain and then apply the heat. With an iron, only allow the heat to penetrate for a few seconds at a time. With a hair dryer, move it back and forth for about 10 minutes. Repeat the process until the stain has evaporated.
- Mayonnaise - Dab some mayonnaise on a rag and then apply it directly to the stain. Let it sit overnight, reapplying if the initial coat dries. The oil in the substance will help dislodge the trapped condensation.
- Toothpaste - Go grab a tube out of your medicine cabinet for this method, but make sure to use the white, non-gel variety. Squeeze some onto a rag and massage it into the stain. Make sure to only scrub on the stained area to avoid damaging other parts of the furniture.
