Step up your summertime barbeques and prepare for fall tailgates with a homemade cornhole set. Use these tips to create a set that meets the standards of the American Cornhole Organization — the NFL of cornhole.
Construction
1. Build a rectangular frame using two 2x4 x 48” plywood boards and two 2x4 x 21” plywood boards, positioning the 21” boards inside the 48” boards. Adhere a 24" x 48" plywood board that’s ½” thick to the frame using 1-⅝” screws.
2. Place the box facing up and mark a spot that’s 9” from the top of the box and 1’ from each side. This is the center of the hole. Use a compass on that point to draw a circle with a 6” diameter, and cut out the hole using a jigsaw.
3. Use two 2x4 x 11-½” plywood boards to create two legs. Make a 3-½” radius cut at one end of each leg using a jigsaw. Turn the box upside down and place the rounded end up against the top corners. Drill a hole through the side of the box and the legs and set a carriage bolt using a washer and nut. This creates rotating legs that fold up and down. Cut the other end of each leg so that it’s level to the ground.
4. Repeat the steps above to complete the second cornhole board.
5. Sand the structures and use high gloss latex paint or varnish to decorate the boards. Lastly, add a set of cornhole bags, and you’re good to go!
