Aches and pain are all too common in the construction field. While you have little control over how heavy pipes or other materials might be, you do have control over the way that you lift them. Try these tips to avoid injury and discomfort.
Lift Properly: Minimize any stress on your back. When you pick something up, bend your knees and avoid twisting your core.
Avoid Awkward Positions: If you’re reaching low or high, get leveled. Sit on a stool or bucket to avoid bending over for too long. Don’t strain yourself; use a ladder when you’re working on something above eye level. You should also keep your wrists in a neutral position to avoid discomfort.
Balance Your Toolbelt: Even a slight imbalance in your toolbelt could result in misalignment and pain. Adjust your toolbelt throughout the day to distribute the weight equally.
Use the Right Tools: Work with ergonomic tools. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and other conditions could result from using poorly designed tools. Use tools that are comfortable and balanced. Power tools should have lower vibration and a longer trigger.
Try Back and Neck Exercises: Simple exercises like lunges, neck stretches and shoulder shrugs help alleviate and prevent body aches. Implement stretching in your daily routine.
