According to EcoVision, “The construction and demolition industry is responsible for creating more waste than any other industry per year in the United States.” Additionally, customers and businesses are now shifting their values toward environmental concerns. Fortunately, there are many ways to increase sustainability and reduce waste on the job. Here are a few simple ways to make a huge impact.
Before Construction
Planning is key in any project, especially a sustainable one. Design spaces to be proportional with standard building component sizes to prevent waste of materials (and money). Plan to use durable materials for a long-lasting environmental impact.
During Construction
Recycle materials wherever possible. Wood, concrete, metal, drywall, carpeting and other supplies are recyclable. Avoid using extraneous building components, like temporary support systems, which are usually discarded after a job.
After Construction
Reuse old or leftover materials. Doors, windows and other components can be used in future projects, repurposed, sold or donated. For example, excess exterior insulation can be used in attics or interior walls to act as another insulation barrier or to reduce noise.
