Living in southern Louisiana means most of us are no strangers to heat. However, working outside in said heat for an extended period of time can surely wreak havoc on your body, mentally and physically. Use these tips to help beat the heat on your job site.
- Water Yourself - Have plenty of it and keep it readily available to your crew. If you’re able to keep it at a cool temperature, you’ll really be in business.
- Shape Up, Physically - With more body weight comes more sweat. Hit the gym after work and avoid high-fat, greasy food throughout the day to improve your daily stamina.
- Adjust Work Schedules - This is easier said than done, especially on a tight deadline, but try to avoid long periods of direct sunlight. If unavoidable, make sure there are plenty of breaks in shady areas for your crew.
- Dress to Impress - Wearing dri-fit and breathable fabrics on your body combined with a wide-brimmed hard hat to protect you against the sun will work wonders.
- Add Some Accessories - In addition, using a cooling bandana, skull cap or sweat rag under your hard hat will bring quick relief because a large portion of blood flows through your head and neck.
While these can help keep your cool, always be on alert for signs of heat stroke. Symptoms can include increased body temperature, altered mental state (confusion, delirium), nausea, flushed skin, headache. If you or someone on your team shows any of these signs, call 911 immediately.
