Attracting Millennials to the Construction Field

The combination of experienced construction workers “aging out” and the lack of desire by the next generation to aspire to work in this demanding field has many contractors scrambling to find abled bodies. With this generation being fed technology’s instant gratification and a push toward white collar fields, it’s not an easy target. However, these tips will help you get to the forefront of recruiting these young-minded workers.

  1. Tap into the Technology Factor - Just as millennials have grown accustomed to having information and control right in the palm of their hands, so has the construction industry. With workflow apps, equipment navigation and drone operators, they’ll feel right at home with a joystick in hand. Highlight these factors when talking to potential candidates.
  2. Be Hands-On - This is a very visual and experience-hungry generation. Instead of handing students a piece of paper or simply telling them everything they have the potential to do, let them actually do it. Have an open house at your jobsite and let them explore, or bring equipment to the job fairs you attend.
  3. Take to Social Media - Want to really stand out to to this target? Go where they already are constantly: social media. They say if it’s not on Facebook, it didn’t happen. Create a short, interactive video ad to attract your audience in their natural habitat.
  4. Show Them the Money - It’s a very slim chance that young people will actively seek out an unpaid job, especially if they don’t have an interest in the field. But adding some green to the equation could change their minds. Offer paid internships, work study programs and scholarships for those willing to consider joining the field.

While this next generation may be a different breed than many long-time construction industry workers, if you communicate the potential they have, you’ll have a full house in no time.
