It’s not uncommon for a contractor who is dedicated to overseeing all activities on a job to hire subcontractors who specialize in certain trades. However, knowing when to do it and how to choose one can be a daunting task. Check out the tips below to help you make the right decision.
Safety - Review EMR rates, OSHA recordable time loss due to incidents, emergency procedures, etc.
Project Plan - Require a detailed plan of action and schedule of activities through the completion of the project.
Resources - Ask for resumes of those who will be leading the project as well as an organizational chart of all workers assigned to the project.
Price - Ask for details on payment terms, and be leery of anyone who asks for a large down payment up front. And remember: cheapest isn’t always best!
Equipment - Subcontractors must supply their own equipment, tools, maintenance, transportation and associated costs. Make sure they are aware and have all that they need.
References/Financial Stability - Subcontractors must provide references of previous work as well as bonding capabilities. Make sure to check their references for accuracy.
